An Introduction to the Centennial of Flight & EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk

The Wright Brothers left their footprints in the North Carolina sand and their mark on the world.

Their remarkable achievement ranks among the most significant moments in human history. It made our world smaller and broadened our perspective on places, people and our own potential. It dramatically transformed the way we live and how we work. The Wright Brothers gave us not only flight, but with it the promise of higher possibilities and greater dreams.

EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk is a centennial celebration of the Wright brothers’ first powered flight—an innovation that forever changed our world. Led by EAA, presented by Ford Motor Company, and supported by Microsoft Flight Simulator and Eclipse Aviation, this yearlong series of inspirational events honors the innovation and determination it takes to make world-changing dreams a reality. Countdown to Kitty Hawk features an interactive touring pavilion and the world’s most-accurate 1903 Wright brother’s first flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., on December 17, 2003—exactly 100 years later.

December 17, 1903 - 10:35 am
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina - The Wright Brothers of Dayton Ohio, are the first to achieve sustained powered flight. Their historic innovation ushers forth a wave of transportation, communication and commercial advancements. The world is forever changed; Lindbergh, Earhart, Yeager, Armstrong and Glenn follow.

A recent USA Today survey of reporters ranked ‘12/17/1903’ as the 4th most important moment of the last 100 years (it is instructive to note the first three could not have happened without the invention of flight).

January 26, 1953
EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) is founded by Paul Poberezny. Established to support and promote ‘homebuilders’, Orville and Wilbur Wright would have been likely members. Leadership of the association is later passed on to Paul’s son, Tom.

July 26, 1992
EAA member volunteers commit to fly 1,000,000 young people for the first time (no cost) and introduce them to the sensation of flight. The goal is to reach the milestone by 12/17/03.

July 23, 2002
EAA plans to celebrate the association’s 50th Fly-In. Membership has ballooned to 170,000 members in 1,000 chapters worldwide. EAA is recognized as the leader in recreational aviation and hosts the world’s largest aviation event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin: AirVenture. Annually the event draws hundreds of thousands of aviation enthusiasts.

December 17, 2003 - 10:35 am / Centennial of Flight
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina - EAA, a 170,000 member strong non-profit association, will lead an international celebration of flight as an authentic reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer takes flight at the 100 year to-the-minute anniversary before tens-of-thousands on hand and hundreds-of-millions watching live around the world. The flight will take place at the exact site; now the Wright Brother’s National Memorial (NPS).
