December
17, 1903 - 10:35 am
Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina - The Wright Brothers of Dayton Ohio, are
the first to achieve sustained powered flight. Their historic
innovation ushers forth a wave of transportation, communication
and commercial advancements. The world is forever changed;
Lindbergh, Earhart, Yeager, Armstrong and Glenn follow.
A
recent USA Today survey of reporters ranked ‘12/17/1903’ as
the 4th most important moment of the last 100 years (it is
instructive to note the first
three could not have happened without the invention of flight).
January

EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) is founded by Paul
Poberezny. Established to support and promote ‘homebuilders’,

EAA
member volunteers commit to fly 1,000,000 young people for the
first time (no cost) and introduce them to the sensation of
flight. The goal is to reach the milestone by 12/17/03.
July

EAA plans to celebrate the association’s 50th Fly-In.
Membership has ballooned to 170,000 members in 1,000 chapters
worldwide. EAA is recognized as the leader in recreational

Oshkosh, Wisconsin: AirVenture.
Annually the event draws hundreds of thousands of aviation
